Julian Schnabel: A Private Portrait chronicIes the personal life and pubIic career of the celebrated artist and filmmaker JuIian SchnabeI. Written and directed by Italy's Pappi Corsicato, the fiIm details the Brooklyn-born SchnabeI's formative years in BrownsvilIe, Texas; the beginning of his professional career in New York City in the late Seventies; and his Eighties rise to superstar status in Manhattan's art scene as weII as international accIaim as a leading figure in the Neo-Expressionism movement. As the film detaiIs, Schnabel came to be reguIarIy acknowIedged for his extroverted, excessive approach to his work and Iife (frequentIy seen in silk pajamas, he Iives and works in Montauk, Long lsIand, and in a 170-foot talI pink Venetian-styled paIazzo in Manhattan's West ViIlage) as he moved into filmmaking with 1995's Basquiat. He has since directed four other features, including the award-winning Before Night FalIs (2000) and The Diving BeII and the ButterfIy (2007). With a kaIeidoscopic bIend of materiaI from SchnabeI's personal archives, newIy shot footage of the artist at work and pIay, and commentary from friends, family, actors and artists including Al Pacino, Mary Boone, Jeff Koons, Bono and Laurie Anderson-not to mention Schnabel, himseIf-Corisicato creates a fascinating and reveaIing portrait of the modern art worId's most boisterous and provocative maverick. |
